Meters

The main meters in use by paranormal investigators are EMF, or Electro-Magnetic Field meters. Paranormal activity is theorized by most investigators to be electro-magnetic in nature, and as time goes by and more research is done, this theory seems to be borne out by more and more evidence. So, by extension, if paranormal activity is electro-magnetic in nature, it would thus be detectable with a device that measures changes in surrounding electro-magnetic fields. Which brings in EMF meters, which can detect variances in EM fields. There is a variety of EMF meters, and while we can't discuss them all, let's look at the models in use by SEPRS, and by most other paranormal investigators.

Gauss Master The Gauss Master, a good choice for your first EMF meter

The Gauss Master is a popular EMF meter among many investigators just getting started. Mainly because you can get one from LessEMF for about $35. It measures EM fields on an analog dial from 0 - 10 milligauss (mG) and has an audio feedback that increases in intensity as the EM field's intensity increases. This is a single axis meter, which means that it best detects fields that are directly in front of it. It's a fairly sensitive meter, the audio feedback is great, especially in the dark, and for the price it's a great little first meter.

This meter is very similar to the Gauss Master. It is a single axis meter. It does not have the audio feedback that the Gauss Master does, but features a digital readout and an increased range of 0 - 199 mG. You can get one of these at LessEMF for 79 bucks.

Trifield MeterThe Trifield Meter, the SEPRS pick of the litter

The Trifield Meter is pretty much the gold standard for paranormal investigation. It is a three-axis meter, so it will detect EM fields no matter which direction you point it in. In addition to picking up magnetic fields, it also detects electric and radio frequency fields. It has two sensitivity settings for magnetic: 0 - 3 mG, or 0 - 100 mG. This meter comes in three varieties - the regular Trifield meter, at about $130, the Trifield meter with adustable sensitivity alarm (our pick) for $190, and the Natural EM meter with alarm, which only picks up natural EM fields (ruling out electrical wiring, etc.) for $200.
